About SAT/PSAT
SAT/PSAT Turbo

The PSAT & SAT Turbo Workshops provide college-bound students with a comprehensive overview of the most effective approaches to the PSAT and SAT. These are ideal options for students with little time to prepare prior to a test. The Turbo Workshops are typically offered shortly before the PSAT or SAT. Students work with rigorous practice tests to ensure they are practicing the skills they will need to have the day of the test. Since the PSAT and the SAT are so similar—the PSAT is slightly shorter than the SAT and does not have an essay—taking either Turbo Workshop will prepare students for either test.

In a typical class, we start by asking students which sections they would most like to cover out of Reading, Writing and Language, and Mathematics. Based on the unique needs of the students in the class, we devote more or less time to particular areas. For each test section we start with strategy and content instruction, followed by teacher-modeling of problem solving. Students then do targeted mini-practice to become familiar with the test questions and comfortable with timing. We also review ways that students can prepare independently going forward, particularly on doing quite a bit of independent reading. Students need only bring a calculator and a pencil – all other materials are provided.

Each of our SAT courses can be taken separately or as part of a sequence—they all use different materials. The Turbo Workshop can be a helpful introduction to the SAT prior to the SAT Intro or SAT Advanced, or it can serve as a good review for students who have already done other classes or tutoring.

Dublin Recreation Center SAT Turbo Class

Sunday, February 26th from 1-5 PM.  Class number 134277-01.
Click here to contact the Dublin Recreation Center or call 614-410-4550 to register.  Cost for the class:  $99 for Dublin Residents, $109 for non-residents.

SAT/PSAT Intro

The PSAT Introductory Class provides college-bound students with in-depth instruction on all parts of the PSAT. This is an excellent course for students who are looking for a thorough introduction to the PSAT. Students will learn the latest proven strategies as they work with practice tests created by PSAT, as well as rigorous practice exercises created by Brian Stewart. Given the similarity of the PSAT to the SAT, taking the PSAT Intro class will prepare students for the SAT as well. The course fee includes the practice workbook—students need only bring a pencil and a calculator.

In a typical PSAT Intro, we begin by asking students what areas of the SAT—Writing and Language, Reading, and Math—students would most like to review. The class is then customized based on the unique needs of the students in the course. With twelve hours of class time, we are able to go much more in-depth into strategy and content instruction, as well as allow students plenty of opportunities to ask individual questions about their personal concerns.

Our PSAT courses can be taken separately or as part of a sequence—they all use different practice materials. The PSAT Intro builds on what is taught in the PSAT Turbo, and lays a solid foundation for students interested in the SAT Advanced class.

This class is available to schools and private groups that would like to set up a customized workshop.

SAT/PSAT Advanced

At last, a group class option exists for highly
motivated students who have already done significant PSAT/SAT test
preparation. The PSAT/SAT Advanced Course is designed for students who
have already scored at least in the 1200s on the SAT or on the PSAT, and
have ambitious goals for score improvements. We move at a faster pace
and focus on more difficult questions than we do in the SAT Turbo and
SAT Intro. Students will be given the practice book and strategy
sheet—they only need to bring their own pencil and calculator.

The PSAT/SAT Advanced Class begins as all of our
group classes do—we ask students what SAT areas out of Reading, Math,
Writing and Language, and the Essay give them the most difficulty. We
then design the course syllabus accordingly to give students the
targeted test preparation and strategy review they need. This class
offers students ample chances to ask personal questions about issues
from college admissions to test anxiety. The workbook we use in the
class is comprised of questions that are designed to be more difficult
on average than what students will face on the actual SAT and PSAT,
thereby pushing students to their intellectual limits and helping them
develop comfort with challenging questions.

If students have done other test preparation with
BWS or with other companies, this class gives students a unique
opportunity to work on advanced strategies and difficult content with
like-minded classmates. The PSAT/SAT Advanced Class can be done
independently, but it can also be done in addition to the SAT Turbo and
the SAT Intro.

About SAT/PSAT

What is the SAT?

The SAT is a college admissions test accepted by all universities throughout the United States. It is a general test of the critical thinking and academic skills that students should have to be well prepared for college.

What is the PSAT?

The PSAT is a shorter version of the SAT that is given in October of the junior year to help students become familiar with the SAT, and to determine eligibility for National Merit Scholarship recognition.

What skills and knowledge does the SAT cover?

The SAT has 3 major components that assess different areas of academic development:

  • Reading–Answer questions about passages from literature, historical documents, social science, and natural science.
  • Writing and Language–Demonstrate knowledge of grammar and editing skills
  • Math–One section allows a calculator, one does not. The math focuses heavily on Algebra 1 and 2, with a bit of geometry and precalculus.

When is the SAT?

In the remainder of the 2022-23 school year, the SAT is offered on these National test dates:

  • March 11
  • May 6
  • June 3

When is it best to take the SAT?

Most students find it best to take it once in the fall of Junior year, once in the spring of Junior year, and once in the fall of Senior year. Students who are trying to earn a National Merit Scholarship should take the SAT in October shortly before the actual PSAT—this will help them rehearse the skills necessary for success in the National Merit competition. Individual circumstances vary, so contact us for a recommendation based on your individual situation.

How do I register for the SAT?

Go to http://sat.collegeboard.org/register. If you are eligible for extended time due to an I.E.P. or 504 Plan due to a learning disability like ADD, ADHD, dysgraphia, dyslexia, concussions, or traumatic brain injury, please go to here on the College Board website: http://sat.collegeboard.org/register/for-students-with-disabilities.

How do they score the SAT?

The SAT is scored on a bell curve that is adjusted on each test date so that results from one SAT test compare fairly to those of another SAT test. It is scored from 400-1600 points, with a 1600 being a perfect score. The national average SAT score is around a 1000. Many schools do not consider the optional essay in their admission decisions. The PSAT is scored along a bell curve just like the SAT—however, the score range is between 320 and 1520.

Can I order a copy of my SAT test booklet?

For certain test dates, you can do so with this order form: http://sat.collegeboard.org/SAT/public/pdf/sat-answer-verification-services.pdf. Students can access their PSAT scores and questions through their online accounts at no charge
